Top 10 Adventure Travel Experiences

Looking to put a little adventure into your travel? We’ve created a list of the top 10 adventure travel experiences that is sure to get your adrenaline pumping. Here are our top 10 adventure travel experiences.

10. Kayak in Antarctica

Hop in a kayak and see Antarctica from the same perspective as the local wildlife – at the surface of the sea. While this may not be as heart pounding as running with the bulls in Pamplona, the awe that you experience as you paddle through some of the largest glaciers in the world is sure to be unforgettable. Bring your waterproof camera.

9. Bungee Jump in New Zealand

Starting as a fertility ritual on Pentecost Island hundreds of years ago, bungee jumping has evolved into one of New Zealand most celebrated activities. In the 70’s the Oxford University “Dangerous Sports Club” became the first modern pioneers, using cords instead of the traditional vines, and shortly thereafter a new adventure sport was born. There are tons of spots to jump in New Zealand, with Queenstown having some of the best locations. The Nevis Highwire delivers a 440 foot drop over the river below from a remote location that is only accessible by 4×4 – if that doesn’t do it for you, go jump off a bridge.

8. Whitewater Raft in Costa Rica

Trust us, Costa Rica has some of the most exhilarating rapids for beginners, experts and insane people alike. If you don’t trust us, trust National Geographic – they ranked the Pacuare River among the top 5 places to catch some whitewater in the world, and the World Rafting Championships were actually held there in 2011. Grab a paddle, say a prayer, and try not to fall out.

 7. Go Dog Sledding in Norway

This is an adventure experience that could be coupled with several other activities – ski Norway, chase the Northern Lights, snowmobile across a frozen lake – there’s enough adventure in Norway to last a lifetime. The most exhilarating activity in the arctic circle though, is definitely dog sledding. Not only do you fly behind some of the happiest dogs you’ll ever meet, but you’re sure to get a good workout in too. Even first timers get a chance to drive, don’t miss this adventure.

6. Ski the Alps in Switzerland

Admittedly there are lots of amazing places to Ski on planet earth, but the Swiss Alps are highly regarded for a reason – some of the best slopes in the world. With some of the toughest black diamonds in the world, not to mention some of the best powder out there, a good time is waiting. Do not go to Switzerland without your sticks (or board for that matter).

5.  Go on Safari in Botswana

The Chobe River in Botswana is home to some of the most diverse animals in the world, with a concentration of wildlife that is unparalleled. Cape buffalo, lions, leopards, giraffes, there is a huge array of creatures to feast your eyes on. Safari’s are typically conducted in the morning and at night, with river cruises available during the daytime.

4. Cliff Diving in Algrave, Portugal

While the adrenaline rush may be the same as skydiving or bungee jumping, cliff diving has a major difference – you’re not strapped into anything. Take a leap from way too high up into some way too clear water. Your first breath coming up will be a moment you’ll never forget.

3. Dive with Great White Sharks in South Africa

Reaching over 6 meters in length and having no natural predators, this is definitely one of the scariest wildlife encounters you will come across. Hop in a steel enforced cage and get as close as your comfort zone allows. If your heart was racing the first time you saw Jaws, this may not be the experience for you.

2. Skydive in Australia

The Great Barrier Reef is pretty…great. Maybe make this a two-for-one event? Skydiving really is the ultimate rush, my first instructor once told me that a majority of jumpers say they don’t even remember the free fall because their adrenaline is pumping so much. Best to pay the extra $100 and get it taped. We recommend taking the literal leap of faith over the Reef in Australia, it’s a view like no other.

 1. Run with the Bulls in Pamplona, Spain

This one is a little beyond an adventure travel experience. It’s a little beyond insane actually. But if you want to have the story topper of all time, then this is the event for you. The Running takes place for a week during the second week in July, with any sober individual over 18 allowed to participate. Tie up your sneakers, have an espresso, and say a prayer or two. Make it three on second thought.
